Estella to Los Arcos
This morning at breakfast the room was so crowded that I took my breakfast (supplied by the Estella refugio) out into the cool morning and lo and behold found some English speakers. Three Aussies, only one called Barry but all from Canberra. Unfortunately, English aside, there was not much in the way of interesting conversation - despite no lack of verbage from each of them.
As I set off I felt ´today is easy´; the walking not too strenous and the backpack starting to feel lighter. I wandered along thinking that in a few more days when L´s feet are better it will be time to start taking a long lunch break and then walking a bit longer. We would both like to up the kms in due course so that we can take the odd day off to look around interesting cities that are coming up.
The first stop was the Irache monsatery- Only 2km into the walk so very early in the morning _ but never too early to fill one´s water bottle from the eternal wine fountain- One bottle each that is, so thank goodness for the hydration bladder for the days proper fluids.
As I walked on from there I thought it would be great to find a pair of scales somewhere as this is day 7 walking and surely I must be losing some weight (though shorts not providing encouraging feedback).
So it was with quite a pop that my balloon deflated on arrival in Los Arcos. First thing at the refugio is washing and showering and foot inspection. Imagine my horror to find a bed bug sore on my foot, already up into a blister from the rub of my boot. Scouring my body I found all the tell tale marks and knew that by tomorrow morning I would be well on my way to looking a right royal mess. It was particularly disheartening when I had gone to such lengths to prevent them and very hard not to feel resentful of Leonie, carrying but not using or sharing, a bed bug mattress protector weighing 100gms. She had bought it online but not thought to tell me about until too late. (and not to mention not getting bed bugs herself when I had been using all manner of sprays and cover protectors)
My balloon furtherdeflated on going to the chemist to look for some spray the refugio told me about (which they didn´t have) I got on their scales and found I had put on 1/2 kilo. I might have to just resign myself to it being my´time of life´ because you could hardly have more exercise or eat more healthily than I have been doing for the last week.
But all was not lost. I went to the alimentacion and got some tinned lentils, courgette, garlic and a tin of mussels and used olive oil and a pan from the refugio to make a delicous meal washed down with a full water bottle of very delicious monatery wine.

Hi Jen
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful this blog is. 2010 is indeed a great year and a great time to be doing this. New beginnings! So great that you are taking time out of your rest time to share what's going on. Much easier when travelling to just soak it up (rather than type it up). Very inspiring. It's starting to remind me of EAT DRINK PRAY. A living commentary and adventure unfolding day by day. Today is the beginning of the iPAD here in Europe and your blog is the perfect iPAD companion. As I played youtube dancing vids to Henry before bed and Debra and I read your blog sitting on the couch it feels like the beginning of a new computing paradigm. Write on, walk on, turn your mobile off when dorm sleeping, uno ceveza per favor, and love to Leonie from us Londoners! Simon
Yes, same here Jen. Keep it up - it's great to follow. SO good to have a purpose to a holiday. Much like having to get to a bar with a tv every day when following the world cup:-) 'EAT DRINK PRAY' S? Is that 'in joke' or freudian slip?
ReplyDeletePersonally I am beginning to wonder if ipad heralds a new level of posts / comms from owners thereof - not necessarily a comforting thought to us web 2.0ers
Hey Jennifer and Leonie. I can see your blog is going to become a daily ritual from now. Very inspiring. I am sure we will be following your footsteps some day. Wellington, and the rest of NZ, is very very wet - I fell that if it keeps raining at this rate we might all just succumb to the ocean and drown. This of course is no impediment to Tristan who, in the driving wind and rain, marched his best friend up Johnstons hill at 4am (before school!) to cook him a birthday breakfast. How they got the fire going on his army cooker I will never know but we are assured it was an excellent bacon, egg, tomato, fried potato and "toast"!!! Great to be 17! Wish I had a friend who would do that for me .....
ReplyDeleteKeep the blog going. Its a great start to every day. Have fun and remember us as you go ....
Dear Jennifer,
ReplyDeleteYou cannot believe how excited I was to revisit your blog only to find more interesting adventures playing out for you. I now have my Spain map out and your route is being highlighted in pink! You must have been walking a week and by my calculations is about 100 or so k's and about 6 inches on my map! Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us - you are a great writer and god forbid that terrible person from N Z that dialed your number...don't they know about dorm rules! Today is snowing here in Qtown and we are wondering why we are not away somewhere hot..... roll on August.. each day as night falls we think of you rising and beginning your journey ....take care and kill those bed bugs...Love Jo and Des xxx
Well you got us hooked! We are missing our installments! Henry says "I miss hearing from my Aunties!". Yes Jim Eat Pray Love - genuine mistake but I will take credit for it... (you know the book right).
ReplyDeleteiHola!
ReplyDeleteMy feet got sore as I read each day....
And enjoying walking with you from my Melbourne CBD appartment.
My news is that I have graduated from daily internet cafe to having (finalement) internet access in my home. By comparison, NZ is so nimble on getting one connected.
iSalud!
