Burgos to Hornillos
The way out of Burgos was immensely nicer than the way in but it still took a good long while to get clear of the city.
I waited until I got to Tostanjados to have my breakfast.
You might be wondering why not just have something at the hostel before leaving but there are compelling reasons for not. First, it is too early and I am not hungry yet, second after walking a couple of hours you not only feel like breakfast but, if you go to a little cafĂ© you can avail yourself of all facilities, find some people to chat with and generally have a good long relax and feel you´ve earned it. This strategy has stood me in good stead and only three times on the whole trip so far have I had to stop and find a spot, so to speak.
The countryside is now very different. I will be walking across the meseta now until Leon.

good plan Jen. Brings back memories for me. When we did the Annapurna loop in 1982 we copied the rhythm of the local trucking contractors who were carrying 70kg sacks of grain on their backs (supported by a strap around the forehead and wearing rubber jandals!). They left at dawn, tossing a handful of dry corn in their mouths as they went. Then about 10 or 11am they stopped and spent an hour or so cooking and eating a meal of rice and lentils.
